Biographical Info

I started as a level coordinator in the Lowcountry Tennis Association (LCTA), and served for 16 years as the President and Local League Coordinator of the LCTA. I stepped down in 2009, but served five additional years as the LCTA’s treasurer and continue today to be a level coordinator. During my tenure as President and Local League Coordinator, the LCTA received two CTA of the Year Awards from USTA SC, an outstanding sports organization award from the Charleston Sports Council (an arm of the Chamber of Commerce), and in 2010, Charleston was honored to be selected as the “Best Tennis Town in America,” beating Richmond and Atlanta in the finals (an honor we still hold today because they never had another competition!!).

During my tenure, I guided the organization through the process of achieving CTA status and 5.01(C)(4) status, and, in the process, helped LCTA to become the second largest USTA league in the Southern Section.

I served as a member on both the Organizing Committee for the Davis Cup (2004) and the Organizing Committee for the USTA League Tennis Southern Section Championships (2005-2006) when the Charleston area successfully competed for those events; and was a strong supporter for the Charleston Pro Tennis League and served on its Board in 2013.

I served with a group of volunteers who, in 2013, formed the Lowcountry Youth Tennis Association, serving on the initial steering committee and helping to draft its by-laws. Subsequently, I also served on the LYTA Nominating Committee.

State: I served 4 years as the Secretary of the USTA SC Board of Directors (2009-11), 2 years as the Executive Vice-President (2013-15), 2 years as President, and 2 years as the Past President.

I have been a member, chair, or Board Liaison for a number of USTA SC Committees including: Diversity, Equity and Inclusion, Adult League, Senior Cup, Adult Competition, By-Laws and Policies, Officials, Junior Team Tennis, Tennis Coaches, Nominating, Ad Hoc Committee for Membership Growth, and Ad Hoc Committee for Building Construction and Maintenance.

I am a trustee of the South Carolina Tennis Patrons Foundation and chair of its Scholarship Selection Committee. In 2018 and 2019, I was the Chair of the SCTPF Board of Trustees, and served as the Vice Chair for the 2 years preceding that.

Southern Section: I have just competed two years on the Nominating Committee for the Southern Section and have served as a member of the Local Leader Liaison Ad Hoc Committee and of the Adult League Committee.

When Not Doing Tennis Related Activities

I served in the United States Navy for 26 years, 3 years in submarines and 23 year in the Navy Supply Corps, the logistics arm of the Navy. I retired in 1991with the rank of Captain, and my last assignment was as the Commanding Officer of the Naval Supply Center, Charleston.

After retiring from the Navy, I worked in the Defense Industry for 7 years and then, in 1998, I joined the Addiction Sciences Division in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at the Medical University of South Carolina. Here, I am the Business and Administrative Manager for a team that provides a full range of support services for the division and its $25 million research portfolio in the area of drug and alcohol addictions. I will be retiring from MUSC in the spring of 2021 with 22+ years of service.

I joined the Board of Directors for Communities in Schools in 1990 and continue to serve in that capacity today. CIS is an organization focused on working with at-risk youth throughout their elementary, middle, and high school years, and helping them achieve in school and earn their high school education.
